1066 muffler vs. striaght pipe

I have what I assume is stock muffler and pipe extension. It is in poor shape, cracking out, etc. I was wandering if straight pipe with a bend at top like seen on the newer models would work ok. Would give me more visibility, cheaper, may be a little louder. Mine is turboed if that makes a difference. Opinions?

I see it done around here all the time. However, we run full mufflers around our place on everything. I know mufflers are way over priced but that is cheaper than to deal with hearing aids decades before you should need them. People seem to always remember to wear them when they do heavy work but forget just to move a wagon down the road. You might be not pleasantly surprised how fast it may affect your hearing.

Yes, I have been reading posts lately in the archives and lots mentioned about that. I learned long time ago to put in the ear plugs first thing in the morning and take them out when you walk in the house. I lost some hearing years ago farming with Dad's JD 830 and 4020. I am so religious with ear plugs that they are there every day, all day when around something running.
My 1066 does have a cab which helps a little.

Mufflers are kind to all animals within 1000yrds of the tractor. The closer the more important. Earplugs help protect hearing, but noise can cause fatigue even if it seems suppressed. I am a please speak louder guy from unprotected farming and hunting. Jim

Thomure Manufacturing makes all the straight pipes in chrome, stainless, double wall the others are selling and have made them for about anything for years. They sell mufflers too. 800-527-9954

I'll second that- I have a handy little plastic container to carry a pair of earplugs in my pocket- goes in along with my jack knife in the morning, so any time i climb on a tractor, i've got em.

the joke in our family is "i hear just fine, it's just that people don't enunciate." don't want to get like that.

I couldn't really tell much difference between the oval-muffler 1066 and the hopped-up straight-piped 1066. The turbo really smooths out the exhaust note. The 786 and 756 were worse with a pipe or an insufficient muffler.
