A noisy transmission

My 1942 A transmission seems to be getting noisy. Wines when in a pull, the higher the gear the more the wine. if you are coasting no wine. Low gear very little wine. Changed the oil put 90w lucas back in it and found nothing unusual when I drained the old out. Took of the top shifter and plate and everything looked fine. What do you think?

Square cut gears, it was noisy to begin with, noise probably increases with age. I would say it's normal, unless you hear a click or clunk or something. SAE 140 oil might help, might not. High gear in all Farmalls has it's own sound.

My Grandfathers A whined in every gear. I just got a Super A and it whines in reverse. I like it. It just sounds like a Farmall to me.

Depends a lot on how the machine was used. CNKS's observation about the square-cut gears is right on spot. They're inherently noisy to begin with. Add a few thousand hours of cultivating, or years of hauling wagons of hay that were to heavy for it (while the H pulled the baler), the will be noisy. A whine or low howl in the absence of any clunk or grind could be fixed (but only to a degree) with brand spankin' new gears if you could find them. Otherwise, it's the song of a perfectly healthy 65+ year-old machine.

I have found that replacing the input bearing in the front of the tranny can sure quiet them down. Usually the front seal is shot so when you have it split replace the bearing also. Seems it always does some makes them less noisy depending on how much play the bearing had.
