there is a 4240 at work and it does not start without using ether. it is the hardest starting tractor i have ever seen. it does not have glow plugs. is there something wrong with it or is it just hard starting?

It's a turbo D268, I always understood the D268 to started harder than the other engines in that series.

Do you have a coolant (block) heater? That will help.

There are no glow plugs, and north american tractors didn't get the thermostart.

A factory ether injection system was available, push a button for cold start assist.

The one we had would puff white smoke, fire enough you think it's going, then it didn't. We put a block heater on it, don't like to use either if we don't have to. Let it try to take off a few times, then let it sit a couple minutes and try again, the semi-burnt fuel seemed to help warm the cylinders. Lashing the valves may have helped some.

Aint it amazing what they will pull if you jump on the diff lock enough to get it engaged?
