h farmall missing on 3rd cylinder

(quoted from post at 10:23:57 10/21/09) Anyone have any suggestions why the 3rd cylinder on a rebuilt h farmall would be missing but the plug is firing.
A valve not closing?

Possibly the plug is NOT firing when it is in the engine. Have you swapped the plugs around to make sure the miss is on just that cylinder, or does the miss follow the spark plug?

If it starts on all 4 and goes to 3 as it warms up, could be a crack in the head or bad head gasket seal leaking compression into the cooling system.

Did you check the firing order? Bought a 350U awhile back. Man said it was in need of a head. He had just put a ton of money in it. I bought it for a little of nothing and trailered it home. Really just wanted it for parts anyway.
Got ot checking and he had the spark pulg wires wrong. Put them on the right plugs and it ran like a champ.
Felt really bad and called the guy. Before I could say anything...he yelled a deal is a deal and hung up.
Never felt bad after that.

Old iron does strange things...some with help.
Had a friend with a shiney green job. Nice tractor...till it got hot. Then missed like crazy. He did everything to it...same thing.
I went over one evening after work. He wanted me to listen to it. He fired it up and it ran good...then started missing. I looked at it as it ran and it had fire shooting all over the place. The wires were old and cracked. When they got warm they started jumping fire to ground.
Could not see it in the daylight...sure was pretty at night though.

Bad plug, bad wire, bad cap, valve not set right. Check those first, simple things, then move onto compression. If your firing order was off, it wouls be missing on more than one cylinder,

Thanks for all your thoughts. I have found the problem pulled the valve cover off and push rods was loose readjusted and is running great.
thanks.
