Charlyn Power Steering Mount

I recently acquired a complete ps unit for my tractor. When I purchased the unit I was told that it came off a older M. I'm trying mount the unit on a "53 SM. Now what I'm wondering is there any difference in mountings where the temp and oil gauges go from the older M's to my SM. I had to make some slight alterations to the pump mount so the belt would clear the upper radiator hose and line up with the alternator - all that is in great shape now. After I got the unit mounted everything worked great but the back of the hood would not go down. The mount for ps motor want let me lower it any further. Now I see the mount that Glennster did for his H and that is a clean mount. Now I'm looking for something like for my SM. Any help where to find a mount like that would be appreciated. James

James – Far as I am aware there is no “better” mount for the torque generator on an SM.

I installed Charlynn kits on a couple different Super M’s some years ago. Both required beating the hood out 1/4" or so ahead of the temp gage opening for it to fit around the torque generator.

The good news is if you do it right the bulge is not noticeable unless you look directly down from on top of the hood.

is the front of the torque generator hitting the bottom of the hood?? you may need to add one or two flat washers either at the torque genny to bracket mount , or to the bracket that holds the gauges to the post.it will tip the front of the torque generator down in the front, also, regarding the mount for the generator, the bracket that bolts to the block needs to be flipped over, and holes redrilled to get t5he belt to line up.

The Charlyn power steering kit came with a different instrument guage cluster / mounting bracket. I just thought they were heavier but possibly they allowed the torque motor to sit lower. I bought a Stage II SM that had a Charlyn p.s. unt on it & the hood hadn't been altered that I could see. I moved the unit to my SMTA, including the mounting bracket & I didn't have to alter the hood & had plenty of clearance.

Only thing I noticed on the SM was a place in the hood where the rolled pin had rubbed thru the sheetmeta because it had slid to one side. When I installed the unit on the SMTA I tack welded the rolled pin in so it wouldn't move.

M and SM would be the same. Some of the newer brackets sold are balkier than older brakets. Said the heck with it on the last couple power steering units I installed. Modified the old gauge bracket with the hood hold down stud to stay there, also holds hood up and made the rest of bracket for the char lynn. That way if needed a rubber pad can be put on the stud under hood to hold it up just a little more.
Maybe with your bracket one trick is to space the fuel tank up a little higher at the mounting studs. Also helps on lining gauges up with holes if your bracket has them higher. May throw the fit of hood off at front a little, but usualy not noticed. Of course the tank can't be raised enough that the steering shaft rubs it. 1/4 to 1/2 inch is enough most times.
