6 Volt Generator Armature for 1959 Farmall 140

The Autolite 6V generator armature on my Farmall 140 needs replacing. A local generator repair shop here in south Georgia says they can"t find one. Where can I find a replacement armature or should I convert it with a 12V armature with the subsequent requirement to replace the 6V battery with a 12V one, replace lights, and install a resistor between the coil and points?

How about a complete genny replacement, not just the arm?

They are around, also repros/remanufactured gennys are available through this site.

You can call this repair shop to see if they have an armature. You will probably need the model number of the generator. Hal

I had a new armature put in my 6 volt generator a couple of years ago. They had to order it in from some source but didn't seem to be a problem at that time. It certainly wasn't cheap but it was available. I wanted to keep my Super C original so didn't want to convert to 12 volt. All my other tractors are either 12 volt conversions (H and M) or standard from the factory (SMTA and 140). Good luck and don't give up yet, Hal.

KED: Go for an alternator, why pay 3 times the dollars to have it look correct, only to have a poor source of charging. I converted my SA and 130 close to 20 years ago, did my 140 when I got it 6 years ago. Virtually trouble free since. I took my 1963 140 out on a commercial cultivating job this summer, ran 50 hours of grueling 2nd gear work with no interuption other than operator needing sleep and food. Takes me back to the 1970s when I ran 7 relatively new tractors on the farm.

Gone are the days of dead batteries, gone are the days of a basket full of non working voltage regulators, even my use of replacement ignition parts are less, my tractors work better and I don't even carry the cranks anymore. Now, I credit the crank issue to the clutch type starter drive, no more locked starters, but then also gone is the dead battery after you get starter unlocked. I have better lights, basically those two items took away all the annoyance of having an old tractor. I can run and compete with the new sub-compacts any day.

My friend, treat yourself to a new like tractor at yesterday's prices. Here is a photo of my alternator mount, go to Bob M for wiring diagrams.
