H battery getting switched

Well, after reading your responses and asking a few more questions, I"m going to give switching the battery so it"s 6-volt positive ground instead of the negative ground it currently is. I"m hoping it will charge, but we"ll see!

What polarity is the voltage regulator cause if you changed the ground and got it wrong you probably have fried it. Voltage regulators dont like wrong polarity thats why they are usually marked which ground they need. A cut-out dont care. The regulators i buy for the correct generators will have an instruction sheet .

That's a good way to blow yourself up.

Please don't make random changes in a desperate attempt to make something work when you don't have the first clue about how it works.

Find someone with the proper knowledge and have them show you how to check out your charging system, or hire it done.

Like was said below, look at the voltage regulator. Take it off the tractor and look on the mounting tabs or for a stamp on the back side. When I bought my H someone had put in a 12V batt and hooked it up neg ground. Some of the new wiring harness was put in wrong also like the wires were switched on the gen among other things. I had to go through everything before I got that mess fixed but it works great now on 6V pos ground just like it was designed to do when new. It was way worth taking the time to do it right and is now one of the few tractors at the local shows with a 6V and generator still in it. Plus I use it almost everyday and it gives no problems.

It can charge equally well at EITHER Pos or Neg ground,,,,,,,,,

Some VR's are labeled suitable for Pos or Neg ground, while others are specific for Pos or Neg ONLY,,,,,,,,,

If a genny is at opposite polarity from battery and tractor ran a while, it can damage VR,,,,

POLARIZE THE GENNY BEFORE YOU START IT this time after you swap battery Polarity

My Troubleshooting Procedure linked below in Para 5 tells how to determine if non charging is a Genny or a VR problem, check it out,,,,,

If battery polarity is swapped the coil leads (Unless a Mag) need swapped and ammeter leads also. She was originally Pos ground but maybe the coil and ammeter never were swapped in the first place if it got changed to Neg??????????
