Rebuild fan on A or get new sealed bearing type??

The fan on my A has given me problems this year. I'm trying to decide if I should tear it apart and see if I can get it to seal up (leaks oil and then causes problems to itself) or replace with the new sealed bearing type. How hard is it to rebuild??? Is this a find a gasket or make a gasket kind of project?? I've heard guys say about just putting a grease zerk on there and stop using oil?

I replaced mine with a unit off ebay (original type). I now wish I had gone with a seal bearing type, it"s just one less thing to worry about in my opinion.

I tried 3 or 4 times to get my original to stop leaking. I finally bought a sealed ball bearing replacement about 5 years ago and have never regretted it.

I was going to rebuild mine on my Super A last winter, but the dealer said some parts were no longer available , and I would be better off with the sealed bearing replacement one.
Mowed all summer with it with no problems.

There is not a shaft seal on these. Centrifugal force keeps the oil from coming out. You may be filling it too full, or the level tube is broken, or the gasket under the fill screw is shot. To fill these, you fill with the fill opening on the side. Then turn it down and let the excess drain out. Then put in the screw to close the fill hole. There is a little stand pipe in there that lets the oil seek it's proper level. The sealed ball bearing replacements won't last 60 years like the originals did with very little maintenance in most cases I suspect. However, I do admit the new ones will be cleaner if you are particular about that, go with the sealed bearing.

The sealed bearing sounds good to me. Does anyone have a bearing number or the bearing dimensons?

Maybe somebone is making the whole unit with bearings, the same way they are stil making the old-style. I did mine with a kit that I got from Mark's, that includes the bearings, shaft and hardware. The existing shaft isn't suitable because of the spiral in it that carries the oil, and the spacing is different since you no longer use the oil slinger. It uses the existing reservoir, and you have to cut the standpipe and the cone out of the inside of it for everything to fit in. Your existing fan blades bolt on the front.
