What's missing from 560?

Power steering and hydraulic problems have left me scratching my head and investigating. After installing the new-to-me hydraulic pump, I noticed underneath there were a couple big(3/16" -1/2") holes with nothing in them.

The one that struck me as most odd was on the cover plate for what CIH calls the PTO drive compartment(#18). According to the parts diagram, there's suppose to be a 3/8 MIP plug in it. There wasn't. What I found was no gasket, a nice view of the clutch, 50 years of grease caked inside that cover plate, and a broken grease fitting on a approx. 2" long nipple. Hope the picture helps explain what I'm looking at.

1. What the hell does this grease fitting go to?
2. Why is there grease around the clutch?

Thanks In Advance,

Matt

Think you are mixed up, if the cover you removed is a flate steel plate its the cover under main clutch, short nipple and grease fitting was in the release bearing sleeve at one time. Bathtub shaped cast cover is under pto and hydraulic pump drive gear and is just to rear of the other cover. Other 2 holes may be the drain holes for the t/a clutch compartment thats supposed to stay dry.

Some throwout bearings have a grease fitting on them. It must be lubed about once a year on tractors with low hours of use per year, or on working tractors twice/yr. (The manual might have differing times). That answer is my policy.
Limit to 2 full strokes of a pump grease gun handle. It is (on many models) accessed by a turning "port" cover, or plug. JimN
