806D transmission noise

I rfecently puchased a '66 806D to add to our IH tractor collection. Tractor will also be used in the fall on an auger & possibly do some bush hogging with it as well.

The other day my son started it up & noticed a rumbling noise in the transmission. Sounds like gears tumbling, sort of like the rear end noise you hear in the Magnums but this is in the tranny. Noises seems most prevalent when the tractor is at an idle and goes away when the cluth is pushed in. You can near a change in sound when the TA is moved between HI & LO. Range & gear shift levers don't have any vibration in them

CIH service manager said it was common to hear some gear noise but our '66 1206 or '66 706 don't make this noise. Any suggestions as to what it may be?

TIA,
sj

I have run across some very noisy transmissions , especially at idle speed, that were due to the failure of the dampner springs in the clutch disc. One was on a spanking new 1086, sounded like it was going to fly apart. Learned my lesson on this way back on a 400 diesel after tearing ta, and transmission apart a couple of times. Disk doesn't necessarily have to look all that bad.

Also may add to Pete's the lower contour shaft Can cause this if the nut is backing off and the gears are getting lose . So it is your call as to to see what is wrong or let it tell you when everything lets go . As i can not hear it myself to say one way or the other . And some of the younger guys really do not know the older stuff like us OLD GUYS THAT WORKED ON THEM . Myself i finally got the time to tear into my 806 today and see what all i tore out of her two years ago ..

You can see a couple gears on the bottom shaft but heres where you get the shaft , to see the nut ya got to split between the speed trans and the range trans
