my tractor needs repainting,is it best to disassemble tractor? is there any tips on installing deacls with individual letters?

Look in the archives--- Painting Farmalls ---should be a good search. The issue is what are you going to do with it, and what is show queen and what is factory, and what is usable protection. JimN

At the factory they were assembled , then painted right before going to the drying oven. The tires and rims were installed after coming out of the drying ovens.

I'm currently painting my 400 diesel. My original plan was to remove grease with oven cleaner and a wire brush. I found that there are just too many corners and tight spots to properly remove all of the grease. So, I removed all of the major components (i.e. gas tank, hydraulic lines, manifolds, etc.) and clean each one seperately. While disassembled, it's a lot easier to make sure that you apply paint to areas that are tough to get to when assembled but visible. It's taken a lot more time than I anticipated (probably about 100 hours total). But I think that the results are worth it. Good Luck and have fun.

There is a LOT of info on the Paint and Bodywork forum on this site, much more than you will find here. Yes, it is best to disassemble the tractor. The factory paint was not very good. As to the decals, you apply them then peel off the part between the letters. Easier to apply and longer lasting than mylar. Some don't like them because they were not original.

Definatly disassembly will make for a better paint job. At the least I'd remove the sheet metal, fuel tank, and major removable items. As far as complete disassembly, not really nessecary unless you are completly rebuilding or making a show piece.
