piston ring installation

Before installing the pistons into the block, how are the rings supposed to be aligned? Top ring pointing toward the carb.(12 oclock)? Second ring to the right?(3 oclock) (front of engine) Third ring toward the back of the engine?(nine oclock)And the oil wiper rings at 6 and 12 oclock?
I broke one ring trying to get them loose and I bought 4 rings for one piston and it only tells me which is up and which is down, but not the rotational directions.
I did not find the info on the Hastings site, although I know I read what I am looking for somewhere when I did my other tractor.
Thank you
Steve

Spaced at 120 degrees is fine orientation to the block is not important. Your expander on the oil ring should have its butted ends at least a third of a circle away from the scraper rail gaps. again no orientation is needed. Clean the bottom of the grooves well before putting them on, or it will lock up and seize. Checking end gap is also extremely important (push a ring into the bottom one inch of the cylinder so it is level and square. Measure the gap with a series of feeler gauges to assess the gap. If it is too tight the engine will seize. Oil the rings with engine oil and use a good sleeve type compressor to get it in the bore. Do not "nick" the crank journal with the rod big end. JimN

You're thinkin' too hard, Steve.

I try not to line any gaps up so that they ride on the outboard walls of the cylinder, but what's more important is that they be staggered relative to each other, not to the motor. On four-ring pistons, I'd put the top two with the gaps pretty much 180 opposite each other and the bottom two 180 opposite but on a line 90 degrees to the top two. Three-ring, just space them close to 120

Don't obsess over it!

"The greatest old wives tale about
piston rings is that there is great importance to the gap whether in size or orientation."
