What do I have

I just bought this IH tractor and want to know more about it. Model MD 1610 RPM but it is not a diesel. Where can I go to find out more; year,manuals,etc. I think its about a 1950
 
If it says MD but it's not a gas-start deisel, then somebody's switched engines or even more likely put the wrong hood on it.

There should be a metal tag on the clutch housing that will have the tractor's serial# on it. Might have to scrub off some grease etc. to be able to see it.

Once you have the serial# there's a link at the left side of this page under "Research & Info" that will tell you what year your tractor is. Additional information once you find out for sure what it is can be found in the archives on this site- do a search for your tractor model and tons of informative pages will come up.
 
...and the disease is contagious. On the left side of this page, under the 'Research & Info' heading; click on the 'Serial Numbers' link and you can determine what year you have. Under the 'Galleries' heading; chick on the 'Tractor Photos' link and you can do an archive picture search for your make/model and read comments. This may provide some direct email links to other owner so you can communicate. A site, ebay for example, may have manuals for sale if you want 'vintage manuals' as I do. This site has links to some parts and may have literature also. Otherwise, ask away. To help in your responses, when you post, be direct and list your tractor in the heading to catch more 'eyes'. If the housing that the serial plate is mounted to has 3 bolts to mount starter instead of 2. Then probably the tractor started out as a diesel powered Farmall MD or maybe the housing or complete rear was used to replace a bad gas one sometime. Unless the same time period parts were used the date codes on engine compared to rear housings will probably be different if just the engine was changed. If the front bolster was left diesel a regular M gas hood will be to short also.
 
MR.B: Are you being fooled by spark plugs. An MD starts on gas then you switch it to diesel. It has both spark plugs and injectors, both distributor and injection pump.
