md mag weak spark

I have an md that runs great on diesel if you can get it to running on gas first. It just will not start w/ starter alone tow it and it will pop rt off.Mag is supposedly rebuilt, thinking of hooking battery ign up and using mag pts I have seen it done lots of times -not pretty but I don't really care about that as long as it will start. Anyone know how to hook up condenser?

Two ideas:
The mag impulse coupling may not be working. Turn it with the crank slowly (mag off) and listen for the sound of the mag impulse firing. If no solid snap as the cylinders are up to fire, it will only start by pulling. (going fast with the engine allows the mag to operate in its normal mode)
The condenser body is grounded just as in a regular distributor, and the wire is connected to the movable contact of the points. Mag point gap is .013" Use that for a mag, and .020" for a distributor. If the impulse coupling is not working, it will not be timed correctly to start, so that has to work. JimN
