Followup Generator Issue, Hey Bob M

Bob, thanks for the link to the troubleshooting flowchart. Is it feasible that my brand new voltage regulator could be bad?? The flowchart tells me it is. I start her up, no charge until I jump BAT to GEN on the VR then she charges fine. Trouble is, the next time I start it, same thing, no charge until I jumper GEN to BAT which is the last step on the flowchart. I fear I'm in denial, just can't believe a new part would be bad. Opinions....

Be sure the Voltage Regulator has a good ground (usualy to the gennys case/frame) before you toss it as it cant work correct otherwise. What you describe indicates its internal Cutout Relay is bad (externally jumping BAT to GEN fixes that) or needs adjusted, but if that makes her charge well that would indicate its ground is okay, but still wouldnt hurt to test it by grounding the VR to the genny using a lil jumper. Also insure the VR is compatible with your ground (Pos or Neg).

The troubleshooting chart includes ground checks by jumping the VR frame to the battery ground terminal which I did. Guess I'll try a new VR. We'll see if I can get any warranty consideration:). Good luck hey?

Hey Mr Mayor - I had a regulator bad fresh from the dealer for a buddy's John Deere 60 a couple years ago. So it CAN happen!

I'd try a new regulator, and if it turns out the first one is indeed NG I'd take it up with whoever sold it to you.

FWIW the nearly new "made in USA" regulator on my Super H gave me fits yesterday. All the tests point to a bad regulator, although the regulator has probably only 10 hours use altogether.
