Was this an Farmall option?

Went to a farm show yesterday in Raleigh, NC and they had a nice collection of Farmall tractors there. Saw this SMTA with a side mounted generator that look like it ran directly off the fly wheel. The generator was made by GE and was 208 3 phase. Was really nice looking set up. Looked to nice not to be a factory option. Any one seen this set up befor?

that is an electrall unit. yes ih made them. but not untill '55 i think. wardner is the electall expert. maybe he will reply.

An Electrall Generator set was a IH accessory.
In fact they were designed to be ysed to power attachments using electricity in a similar way to that of hydraulics. Attachments are more rare than the generators. They are really cool. Several board contributors have them. JimN

The one thing I for got to mention is the 12 volt generator is mounted behind the AC generator and runs off it's own belt. It's hard to see in the picture.

That thing mounted behind the AC generator was probably the exciter, which provides current to the generators field windings. The tractor's standard generator was in the original location.

Some sources have said that only 103 sidemounts were produced. Availability began in June 1954 so SMTAs are correct. That setup will also fit 400/450. My tractor serial number is 519. The casting code for the Electrall gearbox is Jan 1955. My Electrall was not installed at the factory. I doubt if any were. They seem to be a dealer option. Search on "Electrall" on this forum for more info.

Power comes off the IPTO gear plus shaft that is splined into the main clutch pressure plate. There is no shifter on the gearbox so it is always rotating.

I now have a one-of-a-kind dual Electrall setup. The other generator is driven from a cotton picker PTO that has replaced the standard belt pulley gearbox. It is shiftable.

I am looking to add two more Electralls. They will be located in front of the grill. Power will come from the bottom of the IPTO driven gear. I need another 25 tooth IPTO gear plus shaft, the splined hub from an old clutch, the splined hub from an old pressure plate, and the clutch shaft plus coupling.

It is the exciter. What is unusual is that it was supplied by Autolite. That must have upset the IH Electrall concept engineer. More parts to stock. I am not sure of the voltage. That may have had something to do with its selection.

They used to run the pulltype combine with the pto and run a baler behind the combine with the electr-all motor.

Hey Mike I was there also and saw the set up.Had no idea what it was for.Lot of Farmalls and great weather.
