Leak around P/S Valve Assembly Steering Shaft

My model 784 is leaking pretty bad; fluid is seeping around the steering shaft area underneath the steering wheel. My question is to those that have repaired the valve assembly or fixed a leak around the shaft before, how big a job is it to pull the valve and/or replace a seal around the steering shaft (or wherever the leak is occurring;can't tell for sure as I haven't yet taken off the wheel or removed the instrument panel)? I have the manuals but for a novice like myself, kinda hard to estimate the issues I may run into or the time to diagnose and repair the leak. Must be done, however, either by myself or (if I succeed in removing the valve assembly) take it to the local IH dealer in Lennon Mich.

Hi Mich, you need the help of the dealer to fix your leak. To replace the internal seal without damage, the dealer have a special tool. Remove the steering wheel, lift the dash enough to remove the bolts that hold the valve, remove all pipe. For easy access, move the cluster toward the seat by removing the front bolts. Thank you Bernard for your reply/input. I knew if you or JimB2 replied (as you do to most issues with these series of tractors), I would get some helpful information. I will remove the valve assembly with your suggestions and take it to the dealer.

If your 784 has the hand pump like similar models such as the 606, 656, and it is the top seal that is leaking, it is easily replacable after you remove the steering wheel. There is a cap and felt washer under the wheel and then a snap ring holding the seal in place. You can crank the engine and let hyd psi blow out the seal, loosen a line and blow compresed air into the hand pump, or some say you can put the wheel back on and give it some turns/jerks to loosen the seal. Go to casih.com and do a search for parts and enter the 784. You will need a puller to pull the wheel and maybe a little heat. Check the archives here for more info.

bc/Bernard,
Pulled the wheel and there is NO cap and felt washer under the wheel. Also don't see any hand pump so this 784 is not the same as those models bc mentions. There is evidence of oil around the top st'rg wheel wheel shaft which has leaked down to the rubber plug in the instrument panel shaft opening which then leaks down the front of the I.P. There is a neoprene (or rubber) seal at the top of the shaft which has a visible P/N of 6003RS and 1KS on the opposite circumference; there is NO snap ring holding this seal in place. I fired up the engine but there was no real leaking at idle. The leak is definitely at the top of the steering shaft and NOT at the tubes going into the valve assembly. Guess I'll still have to remove the valve assembly and have IH go thru it.

John, I looked at the parts drawing on your 784. The integral hydrostatic power steering valve has a nut on top. Remove that nut and and the steering shaft pulls up. There is a ring seal under that. Looks like they have a rebuild kit for it. Also the 4 lines going to the steering valve have orings that could be the source of your leak. Good luck.

Doesn't hurt to remove it and take it in if you want. I suppose the dash would have to come out to pull the steering shaft up. Hopefully it will drop down so you don't have to remove the dash.

Hi Mich, the steering valve of your tractor have to be remove and dismantle to fix the leak. It's not like serie 56,66,86 tractors. Bernard le mecano Quebec Canada
