Farmall Super A steering loose

The steering on my Super A is so loose and has so much play in it now that it is almost dangerous to drive. I can't make a straight row any more no matter how slow I drive or how manytimes I back up and restart. Does anyone know all the replacement parts that I'm going to need in order to rebuild the steering. Do you know where I can order them from and about how much they'll cost.
-Thanks

I have not had to rebuild my box yet, so I can't help you there. I would urge you to be sure you have tightened everything outside the box before you go inside the box. From steering wheel to lug bolts, there are a LOT of places that can be tightened up and reduce play substantially without internal surgery. Be systematic and make no assumptions. If you have done this, I apologize. I discovered I had a very slight looseness in my lug bolts on one side and it cured my problem--I had been on the verge of ordering parts.

first of trouble shoot where you are getting the free play.
take and grab the wheel turn it left and right. It might be there gear box. Look at the tie rods.
When I got my A the steering arm rod that comes off the box underneath that comes out to the tie rods was the problem.
The arm looks like a T has a square hole in it. I think the newer style has a taper on it instead of the square hole but look there. the square was egg shape. I found a guy who gave one to me and took me 1/2 hour to change and it fixed my loose steering.
I had to have my wife turn the steering wheel while I looked at everything up front to locate the problem.
hope this helps.

The parts for the gearbox arent that expensive. Two bushings two bearings and two seals and a gasket. A little play here and there and soon lots of play as you described. Just start at the tie rods and work back to the steering sector.

Search the archives on this subject, there is a wealth of information on it. I had to resize the key and keyways on my shaft and sector; as well as the suggestions in this thread. Good luck!

Super a problem i had the same thing and what i found after taking off the wide front end and gear box was that the half moon key was broke off and only cathing some what, this will take 2 people to take off the front end but it will i hope fix your problem, illinios farmer.

I had the same symptom, but my problem was a bit different. The gearbox lash was fine. Tie rods were fine. What I found was that the center tie rod arm was loose on the vertial shaft. Appears to have been run over the years with the bolt loose. soooooo, I cleaned it all up, used 2 GM starter motor shims, trimmed to fit the square, new bolt, and it is fixed. I placed the shims on the front 2 flats of the arm, with a short lip on the top to hold in place. These shims were .020 each. I only had to drop the axel, and not the whole gear box (which is a good thing).

No more slop in the steering except for the "normal" lash.

If you are lucky, your problem may be the same.

Took me 2 hours from start to finish to repair including the trip to NAPA to get the GM starter shims............
