Farmall Serial Numbers

On my 1940 M and my 1947 B I noticed the serial numbers on the tag and motor do not match. Does this mean the engines were swapped at some time? Could these still be the orginal engines?

The serial numbers do not always match. In the early days they may have. Usually they are fairly close to each other. On my C's I can't read the tractor serial number tag so no idea how close they are. If there is a huge gap between them there is the likely hood that the engines were swapped out at some time.

I've got a 1940 M, a 1940 H, a 1950 H, and a 1941 I4. The engine serial numbers match the chassis serial on all those tractors. Another H I own, that I know was assembled from several different parts tractors has non-matching serial numbers and also casting codes that are several years apart.

According to Case/IH online parts catalog engine and chassi serial numbers match on A and B from SN 501 to 201,000. They say no attempt was made to have numbers on M match but my 1940 M SN 23015 has matched numbers.
