IH 340 utility

Just purchased IH, 1958 340 utility.
Sent for manuals, have not come yet. Had a hydraulic leak under the seat, fixed same. I need to drain & add hydraulic oil to the tractor. Need to know where the fill plug is located, also the drain plug. This is my first tractor.
Thanks

Hi, Bob.

Let’s take a leap of faith and assume the 300, 340, and 350 Utilities have the same arrangement.

The hydraulic fill plug is a 1” or so pipe-type plug with a square head, in the top of the hydraulic fluid reservoir (the big square-ish metal box that also serves as the base for the seat). As you’re sitting on the seat, this plug would be generally straight down from the inner edge of the center of your right thigh, maybe four inches back from the gearshift lever and slightly to the right.

The drain plug is in the left side (not the top) of the reservoir. It’s sort of straight down from the outer edge of the top of your left thigh. On my 300U it has a square head; on my 350U it has a hex head. You’ll love the way it dribbles the fluid down the side of the tractor! I’m considering replacing mine with nipples and caps next time I have them out.

Ya Rumplestiltskin is close on the fill plug, like he said, its about 1" wide you need a 3/4 socket drive to remove it, it is in front of the seat to the upper left corner of the shifter on top of the transmission cover. The drain plugs are on the bottom, I wanna say theres two of them, (either that or its three) one large one on the belly of the case in the back, and a small square headed one in the center of a rectangle plate on the bottom of the torque tube, between the engine and transmission case.

There is also a level check plug to tell when the case is full, it is on the left side of the transmission right underneath the footplate, between the bottom of the footplate and the clutch pedal, look for either a flat head screw or a square headed plug.

Total capacity is roughly nine gallons. Hopes this helps you.

Thanks for the info. I was pretty sure of the plug positions, but thouhht I better ask, rather than screw up.

Thanks for your help

Once you have it full with check plug, make you a dip stick with a stick, yardstick, or ruler, etc. so you can measure it from the fill plug and not have to mess with that darn check plug again.

Many thanks for your helping answers.
Being a newcomer to the tractor bug
I will be asking many questions.
Its nice to have a place to go and ask.

Thanks to all

Robert, Just want to clarify a couple things.

rumple is correct on the placement of hydro plugs on 300/350U but I think a 340 may be different. Check your manual when you get it.

Your original post was about hydro plugs and I think J.J. was speaking of the transmission case plugs, the hydro system no way holds 9 gallons.

I may be wrong but total capicity on our 340U of the trans/torque tube was close to nine gallons. I dont know how it is on the 300/350U as Ive never worked on either but on the 340U the transmission/torque tube are the hyd resivour, so the drain plugs on the case are the drain plugs for the hydro oil.

That was my point, the 340U is a different animal than the 300/350U.
The 300U is seperate hydro and trans.

Exactly. Thats why the 340Us system holds close to nine gallons for the hydro system and the 300U doesnt.

Thanks fellows for the info. You are right about dripping down the sides of the tractor.I replaced all the plugs [oil] on my 340 utility. Also made a dip stick to check hydraulic oil. I can now check it thro the filler hole in top of tranny.
Works great.
