800 planter firming points

I need to replace the firming points on my 800 planter as the old ones are pretty well rounded over. I was wondering what the procedure is to get the old ones out and the new ones in. Do you have to take the disks off to do it? I"m sure somebody on this board has done this before. Any advice will save me a lot of time and head scratching.

Mark it has been many, many, yrs since I have done this.I am pretty sure you will have to pull at least one disk to put on the firming points. but swing by your local IH dealer and get an expanded view. To be sure after you tear down one you will know what to do on the rest.Good luck.

Remove the left-hand coulter on each row to make the job easier. Use a cold chisel to loosen up the hub cap & then a pump pliers to remove it. Threads are left-hand on the bolt. Watch for any shim washers behind the coulter on the bolt. Disc scraper will be sharp, so be careful.
Remove pin holding the monitor sensor & seed delivery tube & pull up out of the way. Using a 9/16 3/8 drive socket with a 2 inch extension, back out 2 bolts inside the "shoe" where they are bolted to the "arm" of the individual rows. Removal & reinstalling will be evident from this point. Use red Loc-tite on the hub cap rim when re-installing. Think I've covered just about everything-- we just replaced ours this year.

BVack in 1980 when I worked for the IH dealer and the 800 series planter came out. They had a field chnge on those parts .I had to do every new planter we sold. Some were in the field being used and the new ones in the yard.I think I spent about a month doing that. But sorry I can't remember how do to it.

IH also have a plastic gauge to judge wear. Put it over your point if you see any light thru it there ready to replace.

Brownie is correct. If your firming points are worn down that much chances are the seed shoe is also wore out. By pulling the left guage wheel and seed opener you may be able to see a half moon wear spot on the shoe this will send the seed out the side and on top of the soil. Not all the seed shoes maybe wore like this. Definately run your fingers under the bottom of the shoe to see if there even and check the wall thickness. CNH sells those as a kit for about $55 with new bolts w/blue lock tite, roll pins and rubber flap. You will probablby need a breaker bar on the 2" ext for the 3/8" bolts. Just be careful of sharps objects.

Yep, your right 560, the shoes are worn pretty bad. The new points I have didn't fit as they are the updated ones. So I ordered all new shoes too. I wondered last year why my seed was not going as deep as I wanted it too. Must have been because everything was wearing out under there. I've got all the old parts off and the new ones are supposed to be at the dealers tomorrow. Should I set thee planter a little shallower this year? Those new points have a lot more iron in them.
