cub in a barn

hey fellas, got a cub that has been in a barn for 2 years not currently running. Was running when parked. where would yall start to get it running? The engine is free. Gas smells bad.

Change the gas. Change the oil. Change the spark plugs. Put a good battery in it. Check the antifreeze. Crank it for a while, and if it does not start easily, drag it around in high gear and see if it will start.

couple things i'd do.
1- drain the fuel tank and flush it
2-drop the carb bowl and clean it out good, blow out the fuel lines.
3- pull the spark plugs, couple squirts of automatic trans fluid in each cylinder, roll the motor over a couple times.
drain engine oil, check for antifreeze or any creepy looking stuff in there, if ok, refill with fresh oil and change filter.
4- check coolant and belts.
5-pull distrubutor cap, inspect points, maybe shine em up with some 320 grit sandpaper.

crank the motor over and check for spark. if you got spark, button everything up and see if she starts. watch the oil pressure real close if it fires up. the pump can loose its prime.

Glenster hit the vast majority of things. I will ad that there is a socket head setscrew looking plug behind the oilfilter that leads into the oil gallery. Use a pump type oilcan with a rubber chunk of tubing, to adapt it to the hole, to pump the thing full of oil. (it might take several cans, but it will precharge the system an assist catching prime. Cub oil pumps live in the block, and cannot be removed as a unit. JimN

Just to add to what the others have said. I would fill the cylinders with ATF before changing the oil. The ATF will free up sticking rings and clean the cylinder walls and also help if the valves are sticking

If you put the trans fluid in the cylinders as suggested and I do not appose that, you may have to spin it out before replacing the plugs. If the engine freezes up when you put it back togather, be sure to remove the plugs and spin the excess oil out. Too much oil will cause hydraulic lock.
