130 wouldn't start

started the 130 for the first time since fall after having starter re built and cleaning gas tank and other things. Drove it a bit and it just stopped no power and it wouldn't turn over with the hand crank, like it was seized. Took starter off and it seems o.k. Any suggestions.

Tell me that it not cold enough where you are to have ice in the transmission.
Or it could be locked in gear. Can you operate the shifter into all gears smoothly?

If the engine will not turn, (and the crank will not turn it) something is way wrong.

Did it stop with a bang, or just slow to a stop.
Give os a bit more info. JimN

It just stopped no bangs, thuds, or grinding gears, and no ice it was like spring is here 70 degrees. When i took the starter off the motor would turn with the crank and i was tired and cranky also so gave up. Could the starter do that. Thanks

Absolutely. Common issue. The reason it stopped is still unknown, but the starter can jamb. Put a clutch style starter drive on it to cure the starter jamb problem. Putting it back in will not hurt, it will work for some time. JimN

Kerry: The reason the tractor stopped is probably quite different than the reason why it wouldn't restart. When you attempted to restart the starter locked up on the ring gear. Farmalls were famous for this. Some times you can unlock the starter by placing tractor in 4th gear and rocking it back and forth. Years ago we carried a 3/4 wrench in every Farmall tool box, back the starter mounting bolt off several turns and the lock will pop loose.

As Jim has advised you can do away with that old Bendix starter drive with the exposed spring. Buy a new clutch drive for your starter. I replaced mine 20 years ago, haven't had a starter lock since.

Now, this probably hasn't resolved why your tractor stopped. It still may not go, however the starter will crank it now. Then you can zero in on why it stopped.

So it didn't stop because the ring gear locked. Never had it lock up before. After taking the starter off and putting it back on everything seems o.k. but the battery was dead. Wondering if there is a short some place that stopped the tractor. I had new gas clean tank and it seemed to be working good.

MKirsch: A dead battery would never lock the starter, a least not when trying to restart. What might have happened is starter drive stayed engaged after the last start, thus engine was driving the starter until it stopped. That one will kill a good battery in about 30 seconds, even if the charging system is working perfectly.

I had just that happen with my 130 last summer, starter switch stuck, I only moved it 10' then shut it off. 30 seconds later I heard the battery boiling. $100. battery and a $210. starter rebuild later I was back in business. The starter drive was not damaged. CaseIH however did get an ear full about that oriental starter switch they sold me 3 months earlier. Damn sorry state of affairs when the original US manufactured starter switch lasted 49 years, and the replacement 90 days. The old switch didn't screw up a starter and battery when it failed either.

I'll suggest the coil might be on its way out. If the coil gets way hot in use, put on a new one. A dead battery (or a bad connection mimicing a dead battery will also make it stop.
