I ask this on the paint forum but as of yet I have not had any responce, so here goes,,I just finished painting this f20 and it looks good, I used nason products it is enamal. I would like to clear over it is this posible and what kind of prep must I do? Any comments will be appreciated.

You should contact the store that sold you the Dupont paint and ask them or contact Dupont at 1-800-441-7515 and they will put you in contact with the paint division. Hal

i put a response up in the paint and body section. nason ful-cril single stage enamel will prolly not be happy with a urethane clear over it. no telling how the urethane will react with the enamel.

The question is WHY would you want to do this?
Better to apply another two coats of the enamel than a clear. You would probably ruin your paint if you put urethane over the enamel within 6 months of enamel application. And there is no justificaation. The clear coat won't increase the gloss, won't eliminate fading, and can lead to more problems than solutions. Clearcoats are needed only over the thin, base coats that have no gloss in the two stage paints.

First, you don't need clear coat over enamel. Second, in my opinion, clear coat just does not look right on an antique tractor, if you want it to look original.

I'd advise against it, but if you want to try prep is pretty simple. Lightly wet sand the enamal (800 or 1000 grit) to take the shine off it. Wipe off and shoot.

As mentioned below, I don't think enamal will like having a clear coat put on it. So I'd do the tool box or something first just to get an idea as to how the paint will react.

I painted the hood panels red on my Farmall 350 and then went to paint the white parts. After carefully taping it off and applying the paint - the red base coat wrinkled and peeled right off the panel. If couldn't have come off any cleaner if I'd used paint remover. I sanded the newly bared metal and reapplied the white paint.

Whether it works or does not work, there is no advantage to clearing enamel or even single stage urethane. The only exception is if the enamel was the old alkyd type (not likely if Nason), the clear will give UV protection and help resist fading. But basically, if you want clear, use base coat/clear coat.
