Im havin hell readin all these darn charts. I retrieveed this number off of a metal tag. Left hand side. 5985J I figured the J stands for Rockford Clutch

We got to know more than that before we can help you, pal. Photos - or at least some kind of description.....

Need more details, 5958J is on several models. It is probably a Super H or Super M. Look toward the right rear of the block. Should be a cast-in number there preceded by a C, or a D, tell us what that is.

wouldn't be a SH, CNKS. They didn't go near that high. Could be a SM.

Dave: It's me. Thanks for pointing out my Faux Pas.
Could be a SM, SH, 140, 130 300, 350? Who knows.....?

I believe the 300-450 had the tag on the right side? I am not sure if the 130 and 140 use the J designation.

Judging from your posts on FC.com, I would assume that this is a 1947 Farmall Cub commonly called a Circle Cub and indeed has a Rockford Clutch. That is what the J suffix indicates.

You can find this information at the Cub FAQ's #1 paragraph 13 and you can find the other information you need on the Cubs at the Cub Manual Server.

Hope that helps.. and it will apply only if the tractor you are trying to identify looks like this:

To be able to use "these darn charts" at all, you need to know what model tractor you have first.

Once you have that the charts are easy. The chart lists a year, and then the FIRST serial number for that year.

If your tractor is a Cub, the chart goes like this:

1947 501
1948 11348
1949 57831
...

You have 5985J. We only care about the number part, 5985.

5985 is higher than 501, the first serial for 1947.
5985 is lower than 11348, the first serial for 1948.

That means it was built in 1947.

Ok, now I know. I believe the J's first showed on the Super H and M -- was not sure if Rockford was on other models or if so the J was used.
