300 Utility - Change Front Tire Size

Hello. I want to change my 7.50 X 16 F2 Front Tires to 6.50's. My rims are 5.50's and my specs say they are good for only the 7.50's. Can I move down 1 tire size to the 6.50s? The 300U I purchased had 7.50 Truck or Trailer front tires and they are so wide they rub the spindles. The 6.50s will give me enough room and will be the same approx. size. Your thoughts are appreciated. Tom
 
Thanks. The 300 and probably 350 came with 5.50, 6.00 and 7.50's, but no 6.50s. The tractor originally had a front end loader which explains the wider rim and tire option. Somehow the inside of the tire comes in contact with the top of the spindle when making turns and made grooves. My tire guy says no problem going down 1 size.
 
IH rim sizes are usually either the same or one inch less than the tread width, so 6.50's will fit just fine.
 
I have 7.50 X 16 3 rib tires on my 300U. I like this size because it makes the tractor set a little more level. I had to reverse the rim to get adequate clearance.

Thanks for the reply. If the rims were reversed did the tires rub the tops of the spindles? I have small reinforcement plates welded on the top outsides of the spindles. Do you have the same? Thanks. Tom
 
Tom, All the 300 and 350U`s have or are supposed to have the little plates welded on the top outside axle extension spindle tube. They are stops to keep the front steering arms from going too far either direction. I have 7.50 x 16`s on mine and have decent clearance without dishing the rims out.I`ll go out to shop and see exactly how much clearance.
 
Thanks. If you could check that would help. I had either truck or trailer 7.50X16 that rubbed those metal welded plates and hoped that tractor tires (same size) would be narrower. My tractor tire guy says they would be. 6.50's would lower the profile of the tractor front down and may give about 1 inch space. Tom
