engine swap in 756

I have a 756 with a 291 gas that runs and starts excellent and has about 1000hrs on O/H. But I down sized my operation and planning on pulling a 6 row planter and a 16' disc in corn stocks in front of the 1456 and chisle plow this spring. Now up till now it was a chore tractor, feeding hay, pushing snow. I suppose becouse of the easy starting gas in the cold temps. But with the increased field work that I have planned for it, and the ONLY gas powered piece of equipment that I have on the farm, I would like to switch it to diesel. Whether it be a d310 for the "factory spec", d358 out of an 826 or 3088 or 3288. Or even my favorite a dt361 out of a 1206. Give me your input. Also what is my 291 worth. and would all those engines work with out modifications. Thank you

My advice, if you really want a diesel sell or trade your 756 for a tractor with a diesel engine. Finding a german engine with all the parts you need to fit it is going to take much time and money. If you want a diesel find a 5.9 or 3.9 cummins to install. They are much easier and cheaper to find parts for. You will never recoup your costs to convert in fuel savings.

I thought about trading but this is a one owner tractor. I know the complete history of it. The tractor is tight front to back. It shifts like it just came out of the factory its hard to find one like this one without a lot of $$$ dif. I want to stay with an IH engine.

And what is wrong with running a gasser for field work . As long as ya run hightest or 93 octane in it keep it in tune myself i would not have a problem with it and neither do several of my close friends that are running 706 gassers with 291's in them and they get worked . Now granted we are no longer pulling the plow with them as that job is now in the hands of the 1066 at one farm and the 2255 OIL ALL OVER at the other farm But if the 1066 went down don't think for a moment that the old 4 bottoms would not come out of the weeds and would take over till i got the bigger tractor back up and running. There is a lot of work to be done to put a diesel in a gasser more then ya think.

To buy a "good" 310 or 358 is going to run $3000 plus. Then you need the back plate, front motor mounts, flywheel, fan shroud, radiator, throttle linkage, air cleaner, fuel tank, redrill side frames and on and on. All these parts are going to run $1500 plus at a salvage yard. So your going to have over $5000 easily invested. Same with a DT361 install but they are sought after and for a good running 361 your going to pay $4000+. Then these engines are used and there is no guarantee your not going to have to rebuild them to at a huge cost. See why I say it is cheaper just to go and buy a diesel tractor. BTW your gas engine is worth $500 to $750.

You're gonna need the diesel frame rails too. They're shorter. Otherwise the hood won't fit.

Basically you need almost the entire front end of a 756 or 826 diesel to make a D310 or D358 work and make it right. That's why we never did it. Too many parts, not enough time and not enough shop.

Later on, I found a DT360 out of an old bus on ebay. Dad had also made friends with the old wrench at the local CaseIH dealer. Leon said he could make it work, and the old C291 was rattlin' to beat the band, so we bought the engine and took it all over to Leon. He made it work, but it still took a lot of parts, a little cobbling, and the hood is too short.

I practically stole the engine, Leon did all the work for practically free, and got all the parts he needed from his "secret" sources and sold them to us at cost. Dad's recouped the cost of the conversion in fuel many times over, but this is an isolated case where everything fell together and we got lucky.

i agree with vet. Those tasks you list are what that tractor was designed to do. Keep it in tune, clean air, clean fuel, clean lube; and it will do fine.
