Super H will live

For about the last year I have been going back and forth on my ability to restore this Super H.

I have it tore down (the easy part) and found enough issues that dollar wise it made no sense to fix it up. I was toying with parting it out, and buying one already restored.

Well last weekend I took a concealed carry course and the guy setting across the table from me was wearing a black IH hat. I knew we would talk at break. Long story sort, I am going to let him do the engine, the one thing where I kinda felt over my head on, plus the time involved. I set a date to take the engine to him, so I guess I am committed and another one will hopefully live to breathe again. (PS, before someone says "well just cause he had an IH cap on dont mean he knows what he is doing" I did check him out and he is OK)

well gene, ya do it cause ya love the tractor, not to make money. i am working on an m at the shop for one of my customers, basically a repaint, some motor work, he already had the clutch done, and differential and brakes services. by the time its done, he will have over 12k in the tractor. new lights, batttery box, wiring, genny and starter rebuilt, new seat, steering wheel, new front and rear tires, all the bells and whistles.

Well, for me, my last two restorations have been basket cases. Both should have been parts tractors, but they were complete. Sure, I could go buy a running one for almost 1/2 of what I spent on repairs. BUT the accomplishment was worth it for me. I have no fear of rusted, half taken apart engines anymore!

Well Gene, the first time you take it for a spin you'll be glad you didnt part it out. I did my IH 484 last winter and painted it this summer. I still have a few things to do yet. Taking a piece of junk and turning it into something everyone wishes they could have feels great. Everytime I drive it I cant help but smile. You could swing a pipe into my face and Id still be smiling. This being my first tractor and a diesel may have something to do with it.

I payed $1000 for it with a bad engine knock and thought about parting it out, selling it, or selling it to a part yard to see if I could get my momey back. Im glad I didnt do that, I hate to see a tractor go that way.

Hey Glen, just kidding about that air compressor. My son was in on leave with the Navy at Christmas and spied that tank and motor. I didn't know it, but part of his rate is messing with air compressors. I just need to retrieve that 5hp motor from the silo and get a compressor and I'll be in business. That is if he can spare some leave time from chasing poontang.

you love it when it's done, those H's are exallent tractors. they run forever, there easy on gas and they will do pretty much what ever you need them to do. my grandpa bought this H in '87, he painted it, and the only thing we'vw had to fix on it is the front wheel bearings. he put a custom exaust on it cause he hatted the muffler comming out of the hood and blowing in you face. we use it for mowing, pulling trees, rescuing john deeres that have gotten stuck, and anything else you can think of. when not in use she sits and gets looked at. she starts with just one crank of the hand crank in any weather.
