240U With Conventional 3-point ??

On the local Craigslist, there's a seller with a 240U that has a conventional 3-point. My experience with these tractors is limited to the one Dad had in the early 1970's...and the one Dad had was equipped with a fixed-arm, cumbersome type of 3-point that Dad said was an "industrial" 3-point hitch. It was a PITA to hitch up equipment with that industrial 3-point, and I'm sure the sight of that would've sold a LOT of IH fast hitches.

So did IH offer a conventional 3-point on the 240U, or is this an aftermarket conversion hitch?

I can't specifically answer that question, but the years of production for the 240 are the same as the 460/560 1958-1961, 60 series were produced in 62 and 63 also. My 460 has a fast hitch--parts book does list a 3 point for the industrial version. You might look at the online parts book at www.caseih.com and see what it says. Or someone will soon give a definite answer.

There were 3 different hitches for the 240U.
- 2-point Fast-Hitch
- 3-point Fast-Hitch -- essentially the same as the 2-point but the sockets were replaced by an assembly that was much like a 2-point to 3-point adapter.
- 3-point Industrial Hitch -- used 3 conventional links that were attached by fixed brackets. There was no traction control.

I don't know which you are refering to by fixed-arm.

The hitch my dad's 240U had, had arms that were coupled to each other...they were a fixed distance apart, and could not be moved laterally [toward or away from the tire] by hand. They were nothing like the arms on an 8N, which can be moved laterally by hand when connecting to an implement. They were NOT like a 3-point adapter added to a 2-point fast hitch, as the 3-point arms could not be removed...BUT it functioned more like the 2-point fast hitch, in that lateral movement on the either arm was extremely limited, and they moved together. To connect to the pins on a 3-poin t implement, you had to put one arm over the pin, and then laterally move the entire hitch to allow you to get the opposite arm over the pin on the implement. As I said above, connecting implements with this hitch was a royal PITA.

The tractor in the ad on Craigslist had what I'd call a conventional 3-point; the arms look similar to what an 8N has, and each can be independently moved laterally to place the pins on the implement into the ball socket on the hitch arm.

Anyway...is this type of 3-point on a 240U a factory hitch?

I looked at the CaseIH parts online website and it appears that the industrial 3 point has the independently moving arms as you said were pictured in the craigslist ad.What your Dad had was the 3 point Fast Hitch- an A frame looking outfit with 2 "claws".Mark

Mark,
His discription sounds a lot like the 3-point Fast-Hitch, except he says "To connect to the pins on a 3-poin t implement, you had to put one arm over the pin, and then laterally move the entire hitch to allow you to get the opposite arm over the pin on the implement."

As you know, the 3-point FH has hooked ends for the lower points that allow you to back the hitch under the implement and raise the hitch, much as can be done with the aftermarket "quick hitch" adapters that can be put on a conventional 3-point. I don't believe the 3-point Fast-Hitch had enough slack sideways to allow one side to go over the end of a pin while the other was in place. If his father had a 3-point Fast-Hitch, it probably had previously been boogered up.

As far as the tractor on Craig's list, evidently that listing is top secret. I am not going to try to guess what the tractor is without seeing a picture.

Jim. You`re absolutely right . Trying to guess W/O pictures is an iffy proposition. I overlooked the part where it said about sliding over pin on one end first. That isn`t how the 3 pt, fast hitch works.Mark

OK, OK, you guy's need a picture.

Here's one . . . can't recall whose tractor this is, but it is the identical Industrial 3 pt hitch as I have on my 240U.

Yes Paul, that is the 3-point Industrial Hitch I mentioned (except it has a home-made bracket for the top link and a few missing pieces). Whether that is the same as the one on Craigslist is another question.
