which mower is best for a cub

What is going to be better on a cub mowing thicker field grasses, a 4 foot IH rotary mower, or a 4ft mott flail mower?

Thanks for the input guys, I have an L59 too erik, I was wandering if there was a better mower for thicker stuff though. The finish mower is not the best for the tall grass that grows in my field

I've operated a Cub with just about every mower you can imagine. The 59" Woods or the 60" IH/Danco are about worthless in the really tall, thick stuff. Save them for the barn lot.

And the Mott Hammerknife flail mower is really good, but only after the grass is really dry. Heavy dew will make a hammerknife look like you actually used a hammer and a knife...a dull one. But it'll mow your lawn so well it'll make the neighbors green with envy.

For the heavy stuff, nothing beats the Woods 42 with the free-swinging blades. If you think the grass is too heavy or thick to cut, raise the mower and increase the amount you overlap your cuts...and it'll cut anything up to a 1/2" sapling. Just keep your RPM's up...when my family did custom mowing with a Cub, Dad's advice was that there were only two positions that mattered on the throttle: idle and WFO [wide open].

Hope that answers your questions. If you can only have one mower, get the Woods 42...because you can do an acceptable job on the lawn with it if you keep the blades really sharp. If you have the luxury of two mowers, make the second one the Mott...because it's relatively easy to mount and dismount. If you insist on having the 5-footer, first choice would be the Woods. I just don't have many good things to say for the Danco after using one.

The smaller rotary mowers are only 42", not 4 feet. They almost cover the wheels on a Cub with them set as narrow as possible.

If this is tall grass, consider a sickle bar.

Buzzman is right.

I've used Cubs on two farm locations for mowing and it is amazing what a Cub with the Woods 42 inch mower will cut if one is just a little patient .

The Cub sickle bar mower IS a good option for tall stuff, BUT...if you try to mow too fast, you'll just bend stuff over rather than cutting it off [which is why Dad quit sending my brother out on jobs with the sickle bar mower years ago].

Just remember to raise and lower the bar with your fingers straight out,and away from the mower knife...it only takes an instant to lose a finger, or to sustain a really bad cut, when the weight of the bar is coming down or going up. When toghtening the nut on the cutter bar stay rod when the bar is in the UP position, hold the cutter bar in place with your shoulder, not with your hand...less chance of losing digits if something slips.

A 59" mower is too big for a Cub. I'd get a 48" or even better a 42" rotary. The smaller one will give you more time to enjoy using your tractor. rw
