656 hydraulic fluid

Just bought a 656 and it is low on fluid. Can you use the cheap universal hytrans fluid like you can get at the farm store for this or should it be something more specific?. Thanks

I use the cheap 303 fluid from Orscheln in the yellow 5 gal bucket. They run it on sale for 20 some bucks a bucket every so often. Cheaper than TSC or Walmart. Main thing is to check the ratings on the bucket. It meets the requirements for IH hytran.

Scott: I've put well over 10,000 hours each on 8 different tractors in my lifetime. The cheapest maintenance tool you can use is top of the line lubricants. Hydraulic oil is a lubricant, without it a hydraulic pump will last 40 seconds. Whatever you buy, make sure is meets the mimamun specifications set out by IH for that particular tractor. Well above those specifications wont hurt. Don't always rely on what the bucket or salesman tell you either.

If it is a gear drive, probaly the cheaper universal fluids are fine. IF it is a Hydro, only use genuine Case-IH Hytran, keep it full, and keep it clean-change filter as recommended in manual. Heat, water, and dirt are the enemies of hydrostat transmissions and the factory Hy-tran works the best. I have a 656 Hydro, and it has been trouble free for a lot of years.
