Farmall H thermostat

Fired up the 43H again after fixing some leaks. The temp gauge ran all the way up to hot then dropped down, then back up again and down. My other H barely comes up to the run position when I use it.

Do I have the thermostat in wrong? What else would cause that?

Randy, I'd suggest you lose those lock washers on the manifold, and go with the original type extra thick flat washers. Special manifold washers because of the splits in the manifold.
IH has them for about 5 dollars ea, but I think I have a few left over if you can't source them out locally.

I picked up brass nuts for the manifold at NAPA.

Randy, take it in to Mama's stove and check the operation in a pot of water with a thermometer. I learned long ago to pre-test even new tstats and found some bad. Just about blew up a brand new wedge engine in a Barracuda because of defective new tstat.

sounds like it might be air locked. That is there is air trapped in the block and it is getting hot spots that make steam and cause the temp gauge to shoot up. I would take the thermostat housing back off and drill a very tiny hole, smaller that 1/16th in the flat part of the thermostat. That will let the air pass through when filling and not be enough to by pass much water when running. Some thermostats have small valves built into the flange to do the same thing. Another trick is to have the front of the tractor raised higher when filling. Helps get trapped air out.

First thing I would do is loose the automotive style thermostat & replace it with an original IH style.
If you are going to fix a machine, might as well do it with correct parts.
