OT-Reading and Remembring

I have not been able to keep up reading all the posts and replies as I had been. For the past few weeks I barely get a chance, computer keeps acting up. Anyway I was going to reply to Jim N. and ask why he thought this guy might have a crack in the block, when the guy said that the engine had a COMPLETE overhaul at a cost of $2500 bucks. Luckily I went back and reread posts from the last few days and discovered that I had two different posts mixed up--oops. Anyway the one that I remembered incorrectly was from Dr. Bert on the 27th, and I thought the guy with small droplets of anti freeze on the spark plugs had just spent $2500 on his overhaul. So just for the sake of discussion, who would return an engine so dirty that a 5 inch diameter depression crack could not be seen and have the guts to charge the customer $2500 bucks?
Jim N., I bow to your superior knowlege and your ability to read the posts correctly and supply expert and friendly help.

I appreciate the recognition, the sharing on this site is both informative (to me) and a joy when I can help. Jim

Well since it is back, I read that post and wondered the same thing. I also wonder, what in the world caused that type of crack in the block. It sounds like something hit it from the outside?

What I cant understand is the COMPLETE $2500 overhaul. Where I come from I would expect a complete overhaul with that price tag to include, boil out the block and head and magna flux, valve guides, replace all core plugs and oil plugs, cam plug, grind crank, resurface head as necessary, etc, etc, etc. Now if some machine shop had done all this there is no way that a crack (fracture) like that could be missed.
Unless the shop was run by Ray Charles and Jesse James.

Just read "Reading and Remembering" with interest. To answer a few of the questions. I was ask to restore this tractor, having done one of my own, but apparently the owner didn't trust me with the engine. He took it to one shop where it was torn down and abandoned. Hauled it to the shop that rebuilt it in pieces and it was "rebuilt" internally. Outside still covered with grease, dirt, and rust. I discovered the fracture while wire brushing the block. When cleaned up, one can distinctly see where a large pipe or round rod has struck the block---caving it in. I too, feel that this should have been discovered when the sleeves were pulled. Now I'm left to try to salvage this whole mess.

I feel sorry for you Dr. Bert, I too like to help people out but inheriting someone elses screw ups just aint no fun. I still think it was Jesse James or Clyde Barrow that did the overhaul?
