My father just purchased a IH 560 diesel and I was wondering what the report on these tractors were? It has a TA and he was wondering how to properly operate it. The guy he bought it from said never shift from high to low if a load is pushing you down hill. Is this correct? I have not heard any bad about these tractors but I figured I would ask. Other replies are appreciated.

Thanks

You are correct, NEVER shift from high to low going down hill PERIOD! If you do, the tractor will coast, TA will overspeed and possibly self-destruct. When shifting the TA, operate the lever swiftly and smoothly.

Nebraska Kirk is correct on TA operation. You will get varied opinions, but overall the 560 is a pretty good tractor. Apparently some problems with the rear end, but if you are doing lighter work like planting, mowing, raking, baling hay I think it is a great tractor. Will run forever on a tank of fuel doing light work. Put it under load plowing or disking it will do fine, but I prefer a larger tractor for that type of work. The only thing I hate it was very difficult to start in colder weather. We never put in new glow plugs, maybe that was the problem.
