International 350 Utility color

Hi folks, I am new to the tractor world. I have just purchased a 1958 International 350 utility and am planning a somewhat restoration that will most likely get way out of hand. My preliminary studies show all these tractors in IH red. Mine is yellow and appears to have been that way all along. Did they come in yellow? Thanks for any help.

350U were red and whte. Grill and side panels were white with a grey dash.
However IH painted any tractor any color when requested. (usually the street/highway departments, or construction companies. JimN

It was common for Utility tractors to have been painted yellow, mostly for the reasons JAN quoted. Many were repainted red after the first trade-in.

here ya go.

Hey thanks alot for the quick responses. It may make for an interesting conversation point to repaint it yellow. I am hoping to trace back some history on this machine that will prove it's yellow roots. Thanks.

The yellow color is "Federal Yellow". I purchased a yellow 240 Utility last year that I am restoring. I discovered it was actually painted yellow over IH red. It is my unconfirmed understanding that they were initially painted red at the factory, and then over-painted with your choice of color. I have two other red IH's, and personally have enjoyed the change. The white trim (IH 901) is the same as that used with IH red.

Many of the utilities and industrials were painted federal yellow. I couldn't find the site in my bookmarks but google wisconsin history archives for IH tractors and you can find the company letters with the paint codes. Maybe someone else has the web address.

I have 2 yellow 340's. And I know it may not be true on all of them, but these two are yellow to the bone. No red underneath. One is a state tractor and one was a local twp. tractor. And they are two different shades of yellow also. Just FYI

Seems like I have identified a couple different yellows but can't really match the colors today. Federal seems like the cloest I'd go back to. Today's federal yellow paint seems brighter than what mine is.

They have transport yellow, catepillar yellow, etc. but none really match.

My 2606 has a red engine so I think someone has replaced it. Rest has been painted 2 or 3 times (spray job probably for an auction) but I can still see the original and other colors in certain places. The case backhoe has its original paint and it is more of a cat yellow.

the pic, if attached to the post, is what a red and white 350 utility looks like. if you repaint it yellow, the white and silver you see on mine would remain the same, but all the red would be yellow.i have a 2404 that is red now, but has yellow under the red. some parts i've ordered for it, from salvage yards come in red or yellow. my 2404 was a "bareback" witch means it left the factory with no 3 point or drawbar to save on the cost. mine has a pto but most of the "barebacks" did not. mine also has no tach, and the throttle is set at 3/4 or pto speed

Just so you know,IH used a yellow primer in that time period. My Farmall 404 shows yellow where the red paint chipped off. Mark

I have a 350U, about the same year, with a hang on backhoe/loader unit on it. The tractor was originally red, but the company that hung the hoe on it painted the whole thing yellow.

The more I look at mine, the more that seems like the case. The underside of the tractor shows signs of red but the hoe, bucket and sheet metal are yellow to the steel. It sounds like the Pippin/Cone attatchments would have been installed per order from IH so I have to believe they started with a red "core" tractor and built the "as ordered machine" then painted it all yellow. Thanks alot for the info.

Our 1966 International (not Farmall) 140 came yellow to the bone from the dealer. It is officially Federal Yellow and still wears its original color proudly. Looking a bit threadbare these days, however. I would love to hear the exact codes for this color, as I have always ended up back at the dealer to get a match.
