IH 301 Engine Question?

Will the 301 have a spin on oil filter or the old canister type filter? or did they come either way? Thanks Keith Y.

the one that i have has a spin on oil filter. don't know about all of the production.

Far as I know they do, my C221 (same block, smaller diameter bore) does. At some point in time IH changed to spin on filters, don't know if the 301 did.

dealers sold a adapter to convert canister to spin on,dont know if came out that way. Steve IL

Many engines that came with the canister filters have been changed to the spin on type. The aluminum base for the canister filter had a lot of problems with failure of the bypass valves. The cure was to replace the filter housing. The new housing used the spin on filter. It also used metal valves rather than the fiber material of the original style base.
