C and SC transmission casting the same?

The lower right bolt holes on my SC transmission case are broken out. The PO had to modify the fast hitch bracket to make it work, but I would like to get it back to the original configuration.

I have a line on a "50 Farmall C transmission case and while the bolt hole pattern in the manual looks the same as the SC, I"m hoping that someone here can confirm that the two castings are interchangeable.

The part numbers are identical with exception of the suffix - the C ends in R3 and the SC ends in R33.

Any help here would be most appreciated.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that a Super C is faster in 4th gear than a C.

My 200 had that problem so I had a stud welded into it. I know it isn't original but it looks it and works fine. Sorry I couldn't answer the casting question.

Hi- my Super C has the same problem. I bolted a bracket off the axle tube bolts to hook to fast hitch. Also tied brackets over to the left side & added extra steel to stiffen things up. Too big a job to switch housing with new bearings & seals. Fire up the wire feed or go buy one with the time and money to do the switch out! DAN.

According to my parts CD, the C rear frame (thats what the parts book calls the transmission case) part number is 351131 R4. Oddly, the Super C part number is listed as 351131 R3. The R numbers are revisions and usually one revision does not make much difference. Does not seem reasonable that the C would have a later revision than the Super C. However, on the CD, sometimes the revision numbers may be different than what you find in an old original parts catalog. I expect that the cases are essentially the same and will interchange.

C & SC rear castings are different. However, the difference is the tapped holes for the hitch mounting. Either will work for each other in most cases.

This one intrigued me...
I went and checked a few tractors here on the place at the moment:

351131R3, date code Feb "50, Straight C
355986R1, date code Apr "52, Super C
355986R2, date code Jan "57, 230

Only difference I could see between the Super C and the C was that on the Super C rear the holes for the sheet metal housing around the band brakes used on a Straight C were not drilled and tapped. A quick check showed that axle housings and top covers were also the same.

Parts books do indeed show one casting for all rear frames (C/SuperC/200/230/240), the 351131 with R levels of R4/R3/R5 respectively.

I know the hitch mounting holes are the same because I have installed a fast hitch from a Super C to a C before. My question was what differences were required by going from band to disc brakes? So, I checked the parts book for the bull pinion shaft and it"s bearing cage, but they were different. Last, I checked the shims used on the cages and they are the same! (I believe that would indicate the location and size of the mounting holes drilled for the cage on the frame are the same.)

So FWIW, my speculation is that when IH got to figuring the most cost effective way to stock spare parts in the 1960"s, they went back to the C casting which would work on a Super C and 200 with just a few unnecessary holes drilled for the C"s band brake housings, and later figured they could add the mounting boss under the front required for the 230/240 fast hitches (by either R4 or R5) and only require 1 replacement part to stock. I believe that mounting boss is the only difference between the 355986R1/R2 on the Super C vs the 230. I don"t have a clue why the rev levels are out of order though (especially since the Super C parts catalog is a later date than the C catalog so the later rev level should have been known)?

Slappy, bottom line is I think it will work but you will have to let us know ;) Worst case should be you would have to keep all the innards and the brakes from the C.
Hope it goes well for you,
Stan(VA).

When part numbers were updated with only a suffix number change, the new part will work for the old. It does not mean that the old part number may be used for all applications of the new part.

When parts were updated where the new part could not be used for the old, a new number was issued. When this happened, a lot of times other parts had to changed also to make the new part work on older equipment.

Hey Brian do you know a guy that goes by LB from your area? I know its a long shot on this one.
Also do you still have a block with the HYD pump hole for a Super A or C?
