Im trying to get a 47 m going again. It was my stepfathers. I ran it for years. Now (many years later) I want to use it. Its been sitting for 2 years and ran on two cylinders. Had a valve job done, cleaned out the tank, oil change, new battery (6 volt). cleaned the carb (rebuilt). It has spark but doesnt want to stay running. I have to keep flipping the choke on and off to keep it running just for a few minutes. It acts like its not getting enough fuel. Any input would be helpful since this one is crank start and Im not a
young fella anymore.

I think you have said it yourself, The need for using the choke indicates a lack of fuel, I would dissassemble the carb and look for the problem, It sounds like your carb is plugged up resulting in a lack of fuel issue.

I know I've dealt with this in the past, but sometimes all the memories bleed together a little in my head and become less clear. Is it possible that there could be a problem with an intake gasket, etc. causing the motor to lose suction and not get enough fuel from the carb?

Check all possible points from tank to carb lack of fuel is the problem most likely in the carb. Have had same problem even if carb has been rebuilt one tiny peace of crud can cause problem. I have had carb off 4 to 5 times before getting solved good luck.

I found the air passage from top side in front of the choke was plugged. I still have to choke it. It seems like it doesnt have enough updraft. Another thing I noticed was fuel going into the sediment bowl was slight, but when I opened up the carb drain, the fuel poured into the bowl. Is this typical of the system? Thx for the reply. At least Im on the right track.

Take the plug out of the bottom of the carb. Should be good flow of fuel there. Place to start Bernie Steffen

Does it have a good flow of fuel to the carb? If it has one of those in-line fuel filters, get rid of the filter. Also make sure the carb to manifold bolts are tight.

you didnt by chance put an in line fuel filter on the tractor? if so, that is more than likely your problem. most inlines are designed for a pressure fuel system. the m has a gravity flow. if you need to run an inline, get a 3031 or 3032 filter from napa.

You may have blockage in the fuel line from rust and dirt. Could be in the tank too. Pull the gas line off at the carburetor and see if there's a full stream of gas flowing out. There's a screen behind that gas tube fitting your gas line was connected to and it may be plugged. Open that main jet at the bottom of the carburetor too. Hal
