i am a little more knowledgeable about 2 cyl tractors and need to be educated about the red ones.i have been watching some ebay auctions and saw some lville m's advertised.are they more desireable?for what reason? i just bought one and dont have it home yet but i did notice the ser no. starts with Lso i assume it is a lville tractor?and just by a quick look at the front axle it was casted in 53 any help appreciated

That is a Louisville SUPER M. The only difference is the L in front of the serial number. Some people find them desirable, but they are exactly the same as those produced at the Farmall plant.

John: I don't know that they are really more desireable than an Illinois SM. Maybe a little, since they are a "niche" to be filled in an extensive collection perhaps.
One thing I have noticed about the Louisville Stage II SM's is that even though they moved the battery box under the seat, most of the ones I have seen still had a belly pump rather than the live pump. I hope you enjoy yours. The M series of Farmalls are great tractors. mike

I have a Louisville M which was the 15th off the line. Nice, clean machine. In fact, I have a couple of M's, two Super Ms, an SMTA in restoration, and a 400. Kind of pleased with 4 generations!
Enjoy yours.

john-
As a basis of comparison, it's basically the same difference as the "brass tag" John Deere's that some folks get all worked up about.

JR - I own two '53 Super M's - one assembled in Louisville the at Chicago Works. Aside from serial number format on the nameplates the tractors are absolutely identical.

I would yield to Guy Fay who is expert in this information, however I have noticed some Louieville SM differences over the years. Many L SM's have came from the factory with SW6 torque tubes that have the perterusions & holes for the side mount SW6 battery box. Also, from a tractor pulling point of view, I have observed some L SM's have SW6 gears which have a different gear ratio to compensate for the smaller tire diameter of the SW6. These are my observations.

I have one exactly as described by Red Mist. My dad bought it new. It just loafs in the barn now since the last paint job before he died.
