IH 674 Diesel - Air in system?

Tractor started bogging down like running out of fuel, but had fuel. Would eventually cutoff, but then crank after sitting a while, but would then start running bad again.

Changed fuel filters, primary was pretty bad. Cranked up, but then cutoff, now can"t get cranked. Tried pulling and cranking, no smoke, appears not to be getting fuel. Tried cracking injector lines while pulling, but only getting a few drops of fuel.

Air in lines? How do I get air out and fuel in?

Thanks a bunch.

After replacing the filter, did you open the bleeder screw on top of the housing and let fuel come out (bleed the filter)? Did you replace the secondary filter? If so, did you bleed the secondary filter? Did you check the fuel flow at the tank, by removing or loosing the fuel lines? If you have fuel at all three locations, with a strong battery, crack all four injector lines at the back of the pump and crank the motor over. If after a minute of cranking, no fuel comes out, chance is that you may need to rebuild the pump.

Hi these models of tractors often get crap in the bottom of the fuel tank. Test is with a clean bucket remove the fuel line on top of the primary fuel filter (this is the feed line from the tank) and fuel should flow at the full of the fuel line. If it dosen't a quick fix is with a compressed air gun blow compressed air back into this fuel line back towards the tank and try the fuel flow test again. Final solution is to take the shut off/outlet valves out of the bottom of tank and drain tank and clean fuel lines.

Re bleeding and starting:
Loosen bleed screw on top of primary filter and let fuel flow until no bubbles, then close bleed screw and repeat for secondary filter.
Starting, put STOP/START/RUN lever in START position, apply a little air pressure into the fuel tank with compressed air gun and clean cloth in fuel tank filler opening. Now crank engine and if it doesn't start within 60 seconds then stop and crack a couple of fuel injection lines at the rear of the fuel pump and crank engine again. DON'T continuously crank engine for to long or starter will over heat.

Good Luck

Thanks. I was trying to get fuel out of the bleeder on the secondary. I never tried the primary, so that may be my problem. I could get some fuel out of the bottom of the filters, but it would slow to a trickle and stop. I never did get any fuel out of the secondary bleeder, but again I never tried to primary. It seems to be an inset screw rather than a raised bleeder with hex head like the secondary. I will try the bleeders again and if that doesn"t work take the line off at the filters and check flow there. I"m about 50-60 miles from the tractor, so I can"t try until this weekend.

I will post back the results on Sunday or Monday. Thanks so much for ideas. I feel encouraged.

Go to www.caseih.com then parts and D-239 search and it will show all the possible fuel filter types.
D-239 is the engine type and it was used in several different applications and early models had only tin canister fuel filter with a drain on it, later models had 2 fuel filters on right side of engine with small bowl on bottom. The bleed screw was usually a hex head screw with screw driver slot in head.

It still suspect you will find problem is in the outlet of fuel tank. My brother's 684 had the remains of a lady bug corps stuck in the outlet that would give the same symptons.

Lets us know the out come.
