6 Volt or 12 Volt lights?

Check them with a 6 volt battery or a battery charger set on 6 volts, if the light is bright it's a 6 volt, if it's dim it's a 12 volt.

This is NOT something I know for certain, but isn't the only difference in the bulb? I was under the impression that the light itself was the same either way, it just depended if it had 6V or 12V bulbs in it.

I could be entirely wrong (I've only ever dealt with 6V stuff) but that's been my understanding.

if the bulb numbers are printed on the bulbs, post them or take them to a parts store for identification.

Generally, if you put 12V to a 6V bulb for more than a second or two you're going to be replacing the bulb... Other way around just gives you a dim glow...

This bit of information is especially useful if testing the IH sealed beams... which are in excess of $40 / ea to replace....
