300 Utility Spraying Hydraulic Fluid

Hello. I have an Int'l 300 Utility. Over the last 3 or 4 years, I've tinkered here and there with the tractor, trying to get it to be a reliable machine for the homestead.

My latest problem has me stumped, and it is the hydraulics. On the top of the hydraulic box, just under the back right side of the seat, there is a round recessed area. Inside this recessed area is a washer, on top of which is a small round "nub." The nub resembles a grease fitting, though there is no hold on the top of it, nor is there a hex head to turn it out. My only thought was that it looked like some type of pressure relief mechanism.

When I use the hydraulics to either lift, or apply down pressure to the three point hitch, hydraulic fluid sprays out of that spot with considerable pressure. Also, if I pull the lever ALL the way in either direction, it doesn't spray It is only when the lever is traveling (or held) at some point between its normal position and fully engaged.

Does anyone have any idea what might cause this? Or know what the function of the little recess/washer/nub is?

Incidentally, this started happening right after I replaced a leaking hose on the steering system. I did not remove any other hoses, and am sure the the new hose was installed properly.

Thanks for any responses.

I'll take a shot at the answer. If it is on the inside, in back, I think you are talking about a flow control valve. Specifically, on mine on top of the flow control valve is a plug, with an O ring, that is held in place with an internal snap ring. Take the snap ring out, grab the nub with a pliar, and with a little turning and pulling it should come right out. Raplace the O ring, put back together and your problem should be solved. I just bought this O ring, $0.34 was the cost. I have had some problem getting the snap ring to hold and gotten a few hydraulic showers. If you have a problem with the snap ring, your IH dealer can order it, the ones from a hardware store would not hold on mine.
