Knocking noise from belly of Farmall H

My H has a bad knocking noise from the belly. It does it in all gears including neutral. It does go away when pressing the clutch pedal in. In neutral it is noticable to most people but when you are driving I think a deaf person could hear it. Also when in neutral and pulling back on the hydraulics it gets louder. I have pulled both inspection covers off. Everything to me seems loose. This is my first H so I have nothing to compare to as far as the amount of play expected. Are the 3? bolts that hold the joint behind the pump in front of the trans supposed to have a lot of play? Any help would be great. Thanks Anthony

There should be NO play in any of those bolts, and there should be 4 bolts in that joint. If there are only 3, and those are loose, that is where the noise is coming from.

Also besure the bolt that screws into the transmision and holds that mechenism is tight and the shaft is all the way in.My wasn't and I had an awful time finding out whatwas loose. The IH dealer could find it.I just started retighting bolts and found it.

I had that same thing happen to my H when I was harrowing last spring. I took the cover off under the clutch and was able to see up inside. There is a shaft inside of that little area behind the bellhousing, that turns kind of like a drive shaft in your truck. There are, if my memory serves me correctly, 4 bolts up there on that shaft that hold it together. All of mine were loose. I tightened them down good and tight, and the noise has not come back since. Boy I sure was scared, but it has held together for over a year using it every day for at least an hour or 3, sometimes all day long! Good luck!
