Going thru a marrige break up a few years ago my M sat outside with nothing over the exhaust. Water entered my cylinder head thru the exhaust ports, froze up engine and just sat there getting worse. I finally got up the nerve to open it up and try to salvage it. No visable cracks on the head, and didnt magnaflux it. Put in a new gasket and started it up. Im still getting tons of water in my oil, and a little in my cylinders. Is there a particulare place that cracks on the M ???

First two things I'd check is the torque on the head and the underside of the water jacket.

If you're lucky it will be the head gasket. They do need to be retorqued after warming the engine after you've installed a new one.

You might also drop your oil pan and look up at the underside of the waterjacket to see if there's any obvious signs of leaking that would indicte a crack there.

Good luck!

Pull the pan and watch where the water is coming from. At the front of the engine there is a soft plug that may be rusted through. Leakage there would go directly into the oil.

the head was retorked, Im feeling stupid but I need to know what the water jacket is , water jacket to me ie the passeges that water flows thru in a engine block, and or head. ???
And thanks for any help you have given me!

You've got the right idea. If you have a leak into your oil from the water jacket, the two places to look would be the bottom, which would be the under-surface you're looking at when you have the pan off, and the front, under the timing cover, which is where the freeze plug teddy52 was talking about can be found.

looking at the side of my block that is oppisite the exhaust theres what looks like an access cover that is rectangle in shape. What is it and what is its purpose? my book is very vague about everything including this. Between my book and you guys Im thinking that it is the water jacket that keeps getting referred too. If it is, whats its purpose and how does it work.

That's an access to the water jacket.

The water jacket, as some one else I think said, is very simply that part of your motor where coolant circulates. Technically, that would include the radiator, but the term is usually applied to just those parts of the block and head, and more particularly the block.

You could remove that panel for a look see, but it is probably so scaled/sludged up in there that you wouldn't be able to see a crack. For that matter, if you pull the pan and find water dripping, it may be from a crack that is too small to see or is simply obscured from view.

I think your best route is to gt the engine up to temp so that you have pressure in the cooling system, pull the oil pan as quickly as you can and look for any water coming down. If there is a leak in the water jacket, you will find water either seeping from the bottom of the water jacket (i.e., the flat area surrounding the piston sleeves/cylinders) indicating a crack in the block, or from the front, in which case it may be as simple as that freeze plug we mentioned below.

The plate you discuss below does cover the side of the block. Under it is coolant. Removing it will display about 50% of the sides of the cylinders (one side of each)
The engine is a dry sleeve type. It has cast in place cylinder bores that are lined with a thin sleeve. This makes simple rebuilding possible.
The sleeves and cylinder walls can easily crack with the water you indicated was in it, causing your issue.
I would pull the pan, and look at the bottom end for coolant coming out of a cylinder between the piston and sleeve. If it is, it may need to have major machine work done. Putting a new repair sleeve into the block after machining out much of the old cast in place cylinder is first. Then that sleeve is machined out, counter bored and honed for a new thin sleeve. Best of luck, I hope it is simple like a soft plug in the block leaking. JimN

Finally I can understand what the water jacket is that gets refered to . My book really sucks, thanks for the help. I used to have hot rods and built motors for them, but the terms used and a few other things are a little different . Plus my memory isnt what it used to be!!!
THANKS FOR THE HELP

thanks for the help, I finally got a couple answers I can understand. Or mabe its the poor way I explained things to you guys, anyway thank you.
