painting steering wheel '49 Cub

I have almost got the original steering wheel off my Cub to replace it with a new one. Was the outer part of the steering wheel painted?

It has taken days of using Parts Blaster to loosen the bond of rust. Then a two jaw gear puller was used to get the wheel to start coming off the shaft. Much easier than on my 8N Ford.

Yesterday I finished cleaning and repacking the front wheel bearings. One more place to lube and then the wiring all gets replaced. Soon I can start this fine old tractor.

Many, many thanks for the shared wisdom of this group. You are the best!

Thank you. I will do the same - paint the metal and not the outer wheel itself.

Does anyone know where to buy the 7/16X20 wheel bolts? I have five which are corroded right beneath the hex head. So far have tried five or so local places and none have that 7/16 size.

Before you throw away that steering wheel look into recoating at at www.minn-kota.com! The do a nice job as long as the wheel is not warped.

Sometimes these old steering wheels leave black decomposing rubber on your hands. What I have found that works well is to use a product like Castrol Super Clean, or Purple Power and a scrub brush to remove as much of the dry rotting rubber as you can, then use a building primer, wetsand and follow it up with SEM Trim Black. The trim black paint replicates the look of rubber perfectly. It is not a long term solution, but you can get years of use out of it without getting black palms!

Good Luck,
John

Good idea. The second place I called said he could order the 7/16 wheel bolts so I ordered five and they will be shipped to me. The first dealer simply said those were no longer made. :)

Is the downward and back exhaust and muffler out of place on my old '49 Cub? If so, I can replace it later. It is convenient for directing the exhaust away from my breathing.
For now, I want to get the old thing running. I finished lubrication and started replacing wiring today. It is a slow process as I clean contact surfaces, checking wires and connections with an ohm meter. I verified the ignition switch works and managed to clean up one of its wire posts. The switch needs a knob and I will most likely make one of thick plastic or of aluminum - using my small lathe.
