Lathe project

Neighbor has a Farmall B that he uses in the winter. If he puts the chains on, the right chain catches on the brake rod and damages it. He has been turning the wheels around but this makes the tractor very wide. I found a round piece of steel 7 1/2 inches round about 1 1/2 inches thick. I will have to drill 6 holes for the wheel bolts, turn a recess on one side and a flange on the other to make a spacer that fits between the hub and the rim to give the chain extra clearance on the right side. Has anyone ever done this before? Did IH ever make a spacer?

Check if the loops on the wheel are on the out side of the center or the inside. If they need to be moved out it should give enough room.

Yes i have done two sets using 1/4 plate. The wheels can be space on the B in 4in increments so that all you need to do as i run chains on 11.2x24 on my B. Just change the center section and rims to get the spacing. You have to change both wheels to get the 4in spacing get a manual it will show how to do it.

Sounds OK to me, Use grade 8 bolts to do the mounting, as the longer shank length will put more stress on them. JimN

They are on the outside with the wheel dished in. Looks like we should dish the wheel out and mount the rim on the inside. But if that brings it out 4 inches, it may be too much for mowing with a sycle mower. I may still make the spacer.

Each wheel can be moved in 2" increments through various combinations of rim flipping and dishing in and out. Flipping the rim over should move it out by 2", but the tread will be facing the wrong way. Swapping the rims left for right will increase the tread width by 4" total.
