Stupid question: do (internally-mounted) oil pumps require gaskets? Specifically on C200 gas engines?

There are paper thin gaskets between the cover plate, and the body. The gaskets are used as shims to modify end clearance of the gears. They are used in multiples. To set the clearance at less then .001", and more than .0005" JimN
