Where do you check and add the Hydraulic and transmission fluid on a 1958 Farmall 340? All I have found so far is a threaded plug on top of the transmission to the left the shifter which requires a 3/4 inch drive to remove. Is this the fill plug? If so how do you know when it is full or check the fluid level? What kind of fluid does it take?

The check oil level plug is on the left side of the transmission housing, in eye level with the clutch and foot rest. Hytran should be added only. This is the hydraulic sump.

That's the fill plug? [smacks forehead] I've always used a long funnel and filled it through the plug by the foot rest. Thanks for the enlightenment. :)

The serial number on this tractor is 1088 S Y which makes it a 1958. Would this tractor have the clutch type PTO or the Planetary type PTO and what kind of fluid does the PTO take? Thanks.

The planetary PTO has oil level screw and drain screw on left side of the housing. Opposite for clutch PTO. 2 qts for planetary and 1 pt for clutch type PTO. Use Hy-tran in both. We purchased our 1958 unit in 1960 with zero hrs. Several years ago we replaced a seal in the PTO, as Hy-tran was seeping into the PTO from the rear housing and leaking out of the breather cap. Tractor has 3000 hrs.

Maybe you knew this -
S = "Torque Amplifier" with provision for
independent pto
Y = Hydraulic power supply (12 gpm pump)
