424 what do you think?

I think everyone is tired from making hay this week. I never ran across a 424, so can't say anything about it. Probably like most tractors--some people had really good luck with them, & some may have had problems. I don't even remember seeing one at the dealers.

i have had a gas 2424 which is the industrial version for about 12 yrs now and have had nothing but good to say about it..it does steer a little hard since no power steering but lots of power in a small package.. i use mine to custom brushog and with a 5 ft hog and 4 th or 5th gear it will knock down thick fescue waist high and horse weeds over 5ft tall...hope he has good luck with his

Personally I think they are a great tractor for their size. I used to operate one all the time working at the county fairgrounds. We used it for anything from brush mowing to spreading manure. Because it was so small it could fit in all the low roof barns with no trouble. Only thing I didnt like about was that it wasnt an independant PTO.

Live or independant PTO was an option. Mine has it. They used a 2-stage clutch.

Hard to stir up much life on such a general question. Lots of folks never been around a 424. I have. They are fine little tractors with lots of power for their size. Good fuel economy, and a good lift on them. Like most any IH tractor they were built to work with.

We still don't know which engine you have. Gas or diesel.

hey bob it looks like your power steering unit is just under the gas tank and the shaft runs out of it and down to front is this correct and what kind is it?..the only ones i have seen are like the 404 and such where they run lines to the front bolster from the hyd unit on the other side..would love to find a set up like you have..thanks for any comments

I have a IH-424 diesel with power steering. Great machine for the size. Three point works smooth. Steers with one finger. Agile and mobile. Just wish mine had a loader. Work it all day on very little fuel. Starts easy and the two stage clutch is great for 3-point PTO work. Parts (other than sheet metal) pretty easy to find. Sits low with underslung exhaust (easy to shed and low center of gravity - safe). Has fenders, which I like.
What did your friend buy and what did he pay? Just curious. bob farrell

Hey Ray, I have a 1967 424 gas and love it. $2500 was a deal unless it is really beat. Use mine for road maintence and running a 5 foot bush-hog. It will run forever on very little fuel. Turns on a dime and has plenty of power.
only thing is I"m missing some side panels. Let me know if you find any.
