vents in the new style gas caps

I think I have finally found out why my H just dies sometimes for no reason. Happened last week and when I quick opened the drain on the carburator I had no gas. Thinking I could be out of gas I opened the cap and found a vacuum in the tank. Gas started to run as soon as I opened the cap. The 2 holes on top were plugged and I opened them up. Is there something else about the way the caps vent that could be a problem or should opening the vent holes only fix the problem.

I had the same thing happen to my super c. Figured out the problem about a half hour before the tractor pull at the fair! Haven't had any more problems (that was several years ago), but occasionally check the vent on all my tractors now. A fellow member of our tractor club burnt up his 900 ford when he opened his cap after the vent plugged up. His tank was pressurized from the engine heat and spewed gasoline everywhere!

What type of gas cap do you have? Is it the short cap or the taller one that looks like the lid off a spray paint can?

The short caps are potentially dangerous for the reasons you just mentioned. Plugged vents can go the other way too, building up pressure in the sun and spraying fuel when you open the cap. If you happen to be smoking, or inadverdently have some other source of red-hot heat available (like a hot manifold), WHOOSH! There go your eyebrows, arm hair, and maybe more.

If you've already got a free replacement cap, the honest thing to do is buy a new one from a reputable dealer.

However, the design of the new cap is supposed to prevent plugging...

What was the cap plugged with? In 30 years of operating IH tractors, I've never seen one of the new tall caps get plugged. Birds crap all over the tractors, dusty/dirty conditions, everything... Never a single one plugged.

This might dictate a need to treat your tractor differently. Perhaps tarping it when you're not using it if you leave it outside? Perhaps not driving it like a mud rail if that's your fancy?

Get one of the good improved triple baffle gas caps. They have a better vent system. You can get a free one on www.ihgascap.com I've ordered several and have one on all my tractors. I even ordered one for my neighbor's Farmall A and he likes it too.

Sorry for the double post, YT is having some problems with replies being posted today. Hopefully they will have it fixed very soon.

mkirsch: Like you, I've never had one of the new caps plug, and through the 70s and 80s I was running 8 of them. I have had one of the new caps rust out, and it was only on the tractor 8-10 years. Top rusted out and it let water into the tank, not a lot but I was draining the sediment bowl after rains. New cap cured it.

I bought a super c this past weekend that had caught fire and burn up along the shed it was housed in do to a jelly jar type cap I got it for aparts tractor anyway.

A lot of air has to pass thru the vent holes to keep the gas flowing.Hay dust will plug the vent holes. We also have a wasp that put an egg in to holes and caps it with clay. They just did the ignition switch on my sawmill and they plug up the water feed often.I changed the cap on my tractor 22 years ago.I started using tractors 50 years ago and was told never to open the gas tank on a hot tractor.Same with pressurized radiators.Even if the gasoline dosent take fire it is hot enough to burn you.Caps chan be tested for venting on the bench but it makes more sense to get a free new cap.new caps have a ball valve that will prevent gas leakage if the tractor is rolled.85 % of tractor upsets are to the side.
